Job description

The site is a cGMP-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing facility operating on a continuous production basis, with the Emerson DeltaV distributed control system at the core of its process automation.

Role Overview

The DeltaV Engineer (Operational Support) provides shift-based, day-to-day operational support for the DeltaV DCS, ensuring stable, secure and compliant automation performance across manufacturing operations. The role works as part of a shift support team and on-call rota to maintain continuous production, resolving control-system issues promptly within an FDA-regulated cGMP framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide shift-based operational support for the Emerson DeltaV DCS, maintaining system availability and stable performance across manufacturing operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve DCS faults promptly — control modules, phases, I/O, controllers, networks and workstations — to minimise process disruption and downtime.
  • Respond to operator and production requests in real time, providing first-line automation support on the manufacturing floor.
  • Perform routine system administration, including backups and restores, user account management, and alarm / event review.
  • Support minor configuration changes and modifications under formal change control.
  • Support computer system validation (CSV) activities and maintain compliant system documentation in line with 21 CFR Part 11 and data integrity (ALCOA+) requirements.
  • Document incidents, deviations and shift handovers accurately; support root cause analysis and CAPA activities.
  • Liaise with operations, automation, IT, QA and vendors (including Emerson) on incident investigation and resolution.
  • Maintain system security, patching and data integrity in line with site requirements.
  • Support periodic maintenance, planned shutdowns and turnaround activities as required.
  • Work a rotating shift pattern (including nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled) and participate in the on-call rota to protect continuous production.

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in automation, control, electrical engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5–7 years’ hands-on experience supporting Emerson DeltaV DCS within a cGMP-regulated pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of DeltaV Explorer, Control Studio, Operate, Diagnostics and DeltaV batch (S88) concepts.
  • Working knowledge of FDA cGMP, 21 CFR Part 11, CSV / GAMP 5 principles and change control.
  • Willingness and availability to work a rotating shift pattern and participate in an on-call support rota.
  • Strong troubleshooting, incident-management and stakeholder-coordination skills.
  • Familiarity with system administration, backups and automation cybersecurity fundamentals.
  • Authorized to work in the United States; able to work 100% on-site in North Carolina.

Preferred

  • Exposure to DeltaV upgrades, virtualization (DeltaV Virtual Studio) or historian / PI integration.
  • Experience with OSIsoft PI, MES or Syncade interfaces.
  • Emerson DeltaV training certifications.
